| Darien is indeed unique! Located
along the beautiful shore of Long Island Sound, it is a picturesque
New England town almost exclusively residential with a population
of under 19,000. Conveniently reached by both the Merritt Parkway
and the Connecticut Turnpike it is also serviced by Metro
North Railroad and is just a 55 minute commute to New York City.
One of the most desirable communities in the country, Darien is
proud of its school
system which ranks at the top nationwide. Over 85% of our high
school graduates continue on to college. Expenditure per pupil is
also one of the highest in the country.
Our town also has an outstanding
YMCA and YWCA, two town beaches with paddle and tennis courts
and excellent sport facilities plus a wonderful
public library.
Darien's
government is relatively simple form. There are three principal
bodies - the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Finance and the Representative
Town Meeting, which is a direct descendent of the New England Town
Meeting. It is basically the legislative arm of the government.
All Representative Town Meetings are open to the public and public
comment is solicited, but only elected members may vote on matters
brought before the assemblage.
